Welcome to the Disabled Students in Leeds website, here you'll find all the information you need about our organisation.
We began in 2003 as the Disabled Students Society, but have recently become The Disabled Students Assembly. We are known as The Disabled Students in Leeds to incorporate both ideas.
We aim to work alongside Leeds University Union; and the University's Disability Services/Equality Unit to improve things for the disabled student.
The Disabled Students Society was formed in 2003 to bring disabled students closer together. The main aim was to form a social identity between disabled students and non-disabled students and work as a support network for one another. Holding these social events and talks on aspects of disability and to introduce the wider university community to the idea of disability and the difficulties facing its disabled students is still something that we follow now and believe in strongly, though we have now changed our name and broadened our identity and intentions.
We have recently become the Disabled Students Assembly. This means we can campaign on issues that are important to the Disabled Students of Leeds University. It forms one of the union's structure of Assemblies, and anything that needs changing, improving or campaigning on, as far as the disabled student population are concerned we can do.
We hold regular meetings where we can make decisions on such campaigns, and take them forward to Union Council and make changes throughout the university. We really need your support to carry this out. Any ideas you have for campaigns, anything you think needs improvement in the University, then please let us know. Come to our meetings and have your say on what we do for disabled students. The union provides £10000 for improvements every year, and we can use that to make things better, so have a think and let us know.
Our committee is currently fairly small, but we are looking for people to get involved. Everyone is welcome to our meetings, and to stand for a position on the committee. See below for your current committee.

We hold talks, workshops and socials. Everyone is welcome, you don't have to be a disabled student to turn up, you can simply have an interest, or want to find out more. We welcome anyone who follows our ethos and feels concerned and desires to make improvements for the disabled students of the university. A high proportion of people will be disabled at one time or other of their life, and if we can begin improvement here, it will benefit everyone, not just the disabled students who are currently here, but those to come, the staff, and all of you. We are planning to have talks from disabled people throughout the year; and Workshops and awareness days for various disabilities. If you have any ideas for events, then we'd love to here about them.
We currently have several campaigns in the planning stages, including making the university's foods allergy free, with specific ingredients listed on the menus and packaging, informing the purchaser exactly what they're buying, so they can make an informed decision about whether they can eat it or not. We are also campaigning for Feminine Care Products and Safe Sex Products machines to be installed in all university disabled toilets. We would love your help with these and other campaigns, and your feedback about what you think, and if you have any other ideas about what you think needs doing. It is really important that we make a difference, and we need your ideas, advice and involvement to make this possible.
Our big campaign at the moment is to do with the accommodation provided to disabled students by the university
We are hoping to have a meeting with the head of residential and commercial services and put forward our ideas for improving the accommodation situation for disabled students.
We welcome every University of Leeds Student, disabled and non-disabled. Everyone is welcome to attend and have a say at our meetings, you do not have to be a member to do this. We need as many members as possible, so please come along to our meetings and have your say.
We have compiled a list of some useful websites.
