UCCF's new Theology Website

Universities and Colleges Christian Fellowship (UCCF) have today launched a new theology website - TheologyNetwork.org. The site has a similar look to UCCF's apologetics website bethinking.org.

"Theology Network exists to equip you with top quality theological resources - both articles and audio talks. We believe that Christian theology is the most exciting thing possible since it’s simply about knowing God better."

The International Fellowship of Evangelical Students (IFES), an organisation which links Christian Unions across the world, produces information for prayer. This weeks' Prayer News is about Kenya.

Kenya: violent reactions

Ongoing violence grips Kenya following the disputed results of the presidential election. Hundreds of people have been killed and tens of thousands driven from their homes.

FOCUS (the IFES movement in Kenya) had been due to hold a Bible conference starting on 2 January. They have had to cancel the event. Please pray for our brothers and sisters there, that they would know God's help through these difficult days.

A member of our regional staff, who lives in Nairobi, describes what happened after the election results were announced:

'All over the country people reacted in anger... But as the violence has increased it has slowly taken an ethnic angle in some areas. Houses burnt, property destroyed and looting. We have been in a kind of an unofficial curfew... hardly going out of our houses, although today I was able to attend a church leaders meeting trying to broker peace.

'Please do join us in prayer for Kenya. The anger has sown seeds of animosity that will take a long while to resolve between different communities. The economy has enormously suffered and innocent lives have been lost.

'Pray that security may reign and the violence may cease. Pray for the many who have lost homes and loved ones. Pray that the animosity that has arisen may not degenerate further. Pray that the leaders would find ways of resolving the electoral dispute that are just and fair. Pray that the various peace initiatives being carried out by groups, churches and the international community would bear much fruit. Pray that Kenya would not become another failed state.'

Go - Evangelism Training Day

"Go!" is a day conference being held in Leeds on Saturday 3rd November 2007. It is being held in the Leeds University Student Union. Registration is at 9:30am and the conference is from 10am to 5:30pm. The speakers are Mark Bonnington and Roger Carswell. The cost is £3 which gets you refreshments, resources and a conference booklet.

The Christian Union has separate fortnightly meetings for men and women - Gentlemen's Club (GC) for guys, and Deeper for girls. Both groups are meeting tomorrow (Saturday 13th). Meet at 10am outside the student union building.

Christianity Explored Course

Christianity Explored is a course introducing who Jesus Christ is, and what is Christianity.

The Christian Union is running two courses. - one on campus, and one in Headingley. Tonight the campus one is in the chaplaincy but as of next week this is what is happening:

Tuesday 7-9 in the lounge in the Student Union (hopefully meal provided).

Thursday 7-9 at South Parade Church(in the Green House) (meal provided).

This is a great chance for people with any questions about God or Christianity to get them answered. It is a course for students run by students. Each week we have a short talk from someone then discuss topics over a meal. Over the course (which lasts this semester) we will have read one of the books in the Bible - Mark.

Churches Guide

This website now has a labeled map showing the locations of some of the churches in Leeds. The map has been on the website for a while, but until now, the markers showing the locations of churches were not labeled, making the map fairly useless. I have now worked out how to label the map with help from this tutorial, and while listening to sermons on Exodus.

The CU also has a community on Orkut. Orkut is similar to Facebook, but less well known.

Our website has a list of many of the churches in Leeds.

Several churches put on events for freshers in the first week of the new term, for example, meals after the service. If you know of any such events, feel free to post information about them in the comments section of this post.

Christian Union Library

The Christian Union used to have an online library which let people list the books they owned which they would not mind letting other people borrow (see here and here)
Recently however this library has not been available online.

Google Book Search now let you list the books you own - so perhaps we may be able to re-start a library. Here are some of the books I (Ben) own.
Perhaps Facebook could be used as a way of easily sending requests to borrow books. The old library had this feature built into it.
